How to Choose the Right Size Door Threshold

To select the correct door threshold strip, begin by measuring the width of the doorway or the gap between your flooring. Choose a slightly longer length so the door bar can be trimmed down for a precise, gap-free fit.

When deciding between the 14mm and 25mm widths, consider the size of the gap and the visual finish you want to achieve. The narrower option offers a subtle, minimalist look, while the wider T Bar provides greater coverage for larger joins.

Ensure both flooring surfaces are level, as T Bars are designed specifically for even-height floors.

How to Install a Door Threshold Step-by-Step

Installing a T Bar door threshold is simple and requires minimal tools:

  1. Measure the width of the doorway or gap and mark the threshold strip.
  2. Cut the door strip to size using a fine-toothed hacksaw.
  3. Ensure both flooring edges are clean and dry before fitting.
  4. Apply a suitable silicone adhesive to the gap between the floors.
  5. Carefully press the T Bar into place, ensuring it sits evenly.
  6. Avoid overfilling with adhesive to prevent excess from seeping onto your flooring.
  7. Allow the adhesive to fully cure before walking over the threshold.

How to Remove an Existing Door Threshold

To remove an existing door threshold, start by identifying how it has been fixed in place. Most door thresholds are secured using either screws, nails, or adhesive.

If the threshold is fixed with screws, use the correct screwdriver to carefully remove them. If the screws are difficult to turn or stuck in place, gently tap the screw heads with a hammer to help loosen them before attempting to unscrew them again.

For thresholds secured with nails, use a claw hammer or pry bar to carefully lift and remove them. Work slowly and evenly along the length of the door bar to avoid damaging the surrounding flooring.

If the door threshold strip has been installed using adhesive (as is common with T Bars), run a utility knife carefully along the edges and underneath the threshold to break the bond. Once loosened, gently lift the threshold away from the gap.

Take extra care during removal to avoid chipping tiles or damaging adjoining hard flooring surfaces. If any adhesive residue remains, clean it away thoroughly before installing your new door threshold strip to ensure a smooth and secure fit.

Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Dust regularly to prevent surface scratches
  • Clean with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth
  • Dry thoroughly after cleaning to prevent marks
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals
  • Use a brass polish occasionally to enhance the finish if desired

As this door threshold is unlacquered, it will naturally develop a patina over time, adding character to the antique brass finish.
