How to Choose the Right Size Door Threshold

To get the right size door threshold, start by measuring the width of your doorway and add a little extra so you can trim the threshold strip to the perfect size without any gaps. If you have a particularly large area, choose extra-long door bars.

When choosing the width of the strip itself, consider how much of each flooring type it needs to cover; wider options are ideal for joins between different materials or where more coverage is needed. It’s also important to check the height of the floors on either side. If they’re uneven, select a threshold profile designed to accommodate height differences for a smooth, safe, and polished finish.

If you’re placing the threshold strip beneath a door, make sure you have enough gap between the bottom of the door and the door sill to accommodate the 3mm height of the door bar.

How to Install a Door Threshold Step-by-Step

Installing a door threshold strip is an easy, beginner-friendly project that requires minimal equipment, all of which should be found in your standard toolbox. Here is a step-by-step fitting guide:

  1. Measure the width of your doorway and mark your threshold strip accordingly.
  2. Use a fine-toothed saw or hacksaw to cut it to size for a perfect fit. You can also use a circular saw for extra ease and precision, if you have one.
  3. Place the threshold in position to check alignment and ensure it sits flush with both floor surfaces. When joining two hard floors, allow a 12mm gap between the surfaces for the central channel profile on the underside.
  4. Mark the fixing holes on the floor using a pencil.
  5. Drill pilot holes where marked. Make sure that these are slightly smaller than the mounting screws you'll be using, as this will ensure a secure hold.
  6. Position the threshold back in place and secure it with the screws provided.
  7. Press down firmly to ensure it's stable and level across the full length.
  8. The concealing central inlay is adhesive with a peel-off strip and is stuck down over the screw heads. Ensure the channel is clean, e.g. no sawdust, to ensure a firm fix.

How to Remove an Existing Door Threshold

To remove an existing door threshold, first check how it’s fixed; most are secured with either screws or nails. If screws are used, unscrew them with the correct screwdriver. For stuck screws, gently tap the heads with a hammer to loosen them. If nails are holding it down, use a pry bar or claw hammer to carefully lift them out. If the bar doesn’t come away easily, it may also be fixed with adhesive or tape. In this case, use a utility knife to carefully cut beneath the threshold and lift it away. Always take care not to damage the surrounding flooring.

Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Dust regularly to prevent micro-scratches.
  • Keep the area dry to avoid water damage.
  • Wipe with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely to prevent water spots.
  • Avoid using abrasive cleaners.
  • Use a specialist metal polish occasionally to restore shine.
  • Inspect periodically for loose screws or signs of wear and address them promptly.

Can you replace just the threshold of a door?

Yes, the threshold strip can be removed and replaced without needing to change the entire door frame or door.

What is the difference between a door sill and a threshold?

A door sill is the ledge at the bottom of a door frame that offers structural support; whereas, a door threshold is a separate strip placed over the sill or between flooring joins for a smooth, level transition.

Can you add a door threshold strip from carpet to laminate?

Yes, many threshold strip profiles are specifically designed to bridge between different floor types like carpet and laminate for a safe, seamless join that protects both floors.

Will the threshold fit my door/frame/floor heights?

Yes, our threshold strips come in a range of lengths, widths, and profiles and can be cut to size. Just measure your doorway width and check floor heights. If there’s a level difference, choose a threshold designed to accommodate it, like ramp thresholds.
