What Are Door Thresholds?

Door thresholds are the strip of material, usually wood or metal, that runs across the bottom of a door frame. Also known as door bars, interior door thresholds mark the separation between two rooms. Not only this, but door thresholds hold important practical benefits.

An exterior door threshold is a seal underneath a door that essentially protects your house from the outside world. It does this by stopping drafts, rainwater, excessive heat, excessive cold, and even insects and pests from getting in.

An interior threshold is a very important addition to a home because it helps to prevent fire from spreading between rooms. They also greatly improve energy efficiency: the threshold is a barrier that stops warm air from escaping your rooms meaning you don’t have to keep turning the heating up and increasing your gas bill. This benefit also applies to air-conditioned homes as thresholds aid in stopping your cool air from getting out or the hot air outside from getting in.

Interior door thresholds are also very useful for levelling out your flooring. When you have two different types of flooring, like carpet and hardwood floors or laminate flooring, it can be hard to get the levels to match up. Placing a door threshold correctly can really help rectify this and provide a smooth transition between rooms that makes the design of your home feel more stylish and complete.

What Door Threshold Placements Are Available?

Before you think about interior door threshold placement, you should decide on the style of door strip that you want. Deciding on the style you want depends somewhat on the type of flooring you have.

At Stair Rods Direct, we are proud to offer a premier range of door threshold strips in different materials, colours and styles. We provide trims that can be used for:

  • Joining carpets to carpets
  • Joining carpets to hard floors
  • Joining hard floors to hard floors

These are the five main types of interior door thresholds and their placement:

  • Bumper seal thresholds: This is a door strip that presses against the bottom of the door when it’s shut to create a solid seal.
  • Heavy-duty thresholds: These door thresholds are built to withstand heavy foot traffic and are usually placed in commercial or industrial spaces.
  • Thermal break thresholds: These thresholds specialise in preventing cold air or heat from entering up through the floor and are placed in the middle of a threshold to keep it from becoming moist and slippery.
  • Dividers: Dividers are used, as the name suggests, to divide up the flooring between different rooms. They can also be referred to as floor, carpet, wood or tile dividers as they’re versatile for use throughout the home.

How Should I Place a Door Threshold?

An interior door threshold is thankfully a lot easier to place than an exterior one. As per the helpful diagram we’ve provided below, your door threshold bar should be placed over the expansion gap between two sets of flooring. When positioning a threshold bar, you need to make sure that you place it directly below the door, with measurements carefully made, as you don’t want to see the strip when your door is closed.

The main steps to any interior door threshold placement are:

  1. Measuring the width of your doorway.
  2. Cutting your door threshold to the correct size.
  3. Drilling the pilot holes.
  4. Fitting the door bar in place.

There are a number of factors to consider when thinking about your interior door threshold placement. Depending on what flooring you have, there are slightly different methods to fitting a door bar.

For example, when placing the door bar across the edges of carpet, between different areas of carpet, note that the carpet in your doorway needs to be fitted with grippers and underlay to keep it securely in place.  Door thresholds can also neaten up the edges of a carpet, providing smoother transitions for carpet to laminate flooring.

We have fully detailed, step-by-step guides on fitting door bars over every type of flooring here.
