After another year like no other, how we style our living space is adapting with the times once more. As we move towards a more positive future, the interior design trends that will come to dominate 2022 are catching up.

Here at Stair Rods Direct, we always stay on top of the latest interior design trends so that we can ensure we can help our customers achieve the beautiful home design of their dreams to the best of our ability. We’re so committed to this that we also want to help you keep up with trends yourself, and to understand how they come about.

So, here is our comprehensive guide to 2022’s current interior design trends.

How Do Trends Develop in Interior Design?

Interior design trends develop as many trends do: through what’s happening in the world’s cultural landscape ricocheting through to responding trends in art and design. In turn, these translate into the materials and designs available for styling our homes.

As ever, a new year brings with it a refreshed mindset and a focus on looking positively to the future. What we tend to see in the interior design world is an emphasis on macro trends, or trends that are more expansive and hold more longevity to them than the breakneck speeds of the constantly changing trends in fast fashion, say.

In 2022, for example, this macro tendency is materialising in the continuation of the “cottagecore” scene. Emerging into mainstream culture in 2021 via the viral content mills of TikTok and Instagram posts, “cottagecore” had more Google searches in the world than any other design style and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon. Idyllic country charm in the form of cosy cottages suffused with rough-hewn textures and natural tones all combine in cottagecore to create a consciously rustic interior vibe. Something that strives towards back-to-basics authenticity and connecting with nature. In 2022, as you’ll see below, cottagecore continues in the nature-inspired green colour scheme that is becoming all the rage.

At Stair Rods Direct, we have a bespoke range of stair rods, door thresholds and stair runners to get you inspired and ready to enhance your home.

The Top Interior Design Trends of 2022

Here are the top trends in interior design that we’re noticing for this year:

Bringing the outdoors in

Another extended period of being stuck indoors means people are seeking out nature in all its forms, looking to bring its serenity and open spaces into the home.

Appropriately, then, green is the colour of the year. Pinterest has reported a massive increase (80%, in fact) in searches for green interior design inspiration, as people look for ways to throw their doors open for the outside world to come in.

Green can be an intimidatingly bold colour palette to bring into the home, so look out for softer shades and blend tones of mint and sage with earthy hues. A stair runner could be the perfect way to subtly bring this mood into your home. Your hallway and stairs are often the first things guests see in your house; a stair runner in a soft green could suggest an enticing invitation into a tranquil home.

Spaces for gathering

The importance of getting together for quality time with friends and family was once again emphasised last year by the lack of being able to. 2022 will therefore see an increase in entertaining people in the home.

If you’re hosting more, you want your home to look the part so make sure you’re attentive to its upkeep, especially in the most social place of all, the living room. It’s often the small details that count here: make 2022 the year you sort out things like frayed carpet edges with easy bind carpet edging, or prevent scuffed skirting boards with skiffers and skirting board corner protectors

Invite guests to a home you’re proud of.

Playfulness

After being starved of it, having fun is back with a vengeance. Bring a sense of vibrancy and vitality into your home with playful designs. Subtle green hues can be livened up with a fun pattern, to combine playfulness with the trend of nature-inspired design.

Comfort

Despite the move towards the world finally functioning more normally, staying in is still big, as is working from home. As home is the place people spend the majority of their time now, comfort will again take precedence.

If you have wooden stairs, a plush carpet stair runner is a great way to add a sense of luxurious comfort to your home space.

Work and home life separation

Now the novelty of the mass working from home phase has worn off, people are looking for more separation between their work and personal lives, even if these are currently combined by necessity.

We’re seeing design in homes that comes with this kind of clear separation in mind. Door thresholds are a great, subtle way to achieve this: creating a solid bar to clearly define different parts of your home for different purposes so that you can leave work in your home office and relax elsewhere. From modern to traditional door bars, we’ll have something for you, so take a look through our door thresholds for inspiration on achieving this style.

Craftsmanship

Sustainability is the idea here. When choosing what to decorate homes with, there’s an uptake in prioritising responsible manufacturing. There’s a real drive to investing in the future, choosing products and designs for their high quality craftsmanship and longevity. In accordance with the overarching trend of the desire to bring the outdoors indoors, natural materials are in demand as they add a sense of authenticity to living spaces.

Stair Rods Direct is committed to sustainable business practises and sourcing high quality homeware products that you can rely on. Nearly all of our products are made to order, so that nothing is wasted.

How to Keep Up With Interior Design Trends

While interior design trends do tend to move at a slower pace than trends in the fashion world, it can still be hard to keep up. One of the best ways to keep up-to-date with what’s trending is by following your favourite brands on social media or looking at what’s trending in interior design on Pinterest.

But if the idea of updating your home’s furniture and accessories in accordance to what the ever-changing trending interior design styles are is not appealing to you, as indeed it may not be if you’re following this year’s movement towards sustainable investment, then we at Stair Rods Direct are here to show you there are better ways.

A simple, clean style never really goes out of fashion and suits a range of living spaces, so keeping things natural and uncluttered can really be relied upon to keep your home feeling contemporary. Similarly, investing in timeless decor, or vintage styles like mid-century modern, are tried and tested methods of styling a home that has worked for decades.

We’re committed at Stair Rods Direct to providing a wide range of designs, made to order, so that we can help as many people as possible achieve their dream home, no matter their personal preference.
